Our Farming Practices

Growing Organic Blueberries with Respect for Nature, Community, and the Land

At Bilambil Organic Blueberry Co., our farming practices are guided by a simple principle: grow food in a way that preserves the land, protects the environment, and produces blueberries that are as pure and naturally flavourful as possible. We believe that truly exceptional fruit comes from healthy soil, thriving ecosystems, and careful, hands‑on farming — not chemicals or shortcuts.

Our approach reflects decades of care. Many of our blueberry plants are over 50 years old, giving our farm a deep-rooted heritage and a level of fruit quality that only comes with time. These mature plants are at the heart of everything we do, and our practices revolve around nurturing them the right way.

Certified Organic from Soil to Harvest

We grow our blueberries 100% organically, following strict standards that ensure the fruit you take home is clean, natural, and free from synthetic inputs.
This means:

  • No synthetic pesticides
  • No artificial fertilisers
  • No herbicides or growth accelerators
  • No genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

Instead of relying on chemicals, we prioritise healthy soil, biodiversity, and natural ecological balance. Our organic certification represents our commitment to doing things properly — for the land, for our plants, and for your health.

Living Soil, Living Plants

Healthy soil grows healthy plants.
Over the decades, we’ve enriched and protected our soil through practices such as:

  • Regular mulching to retain moisture and suppress weeds
  • Organic compost to build natural fertility
  • Minimal tilling to preserve soil structure
  • Encouraging earthworms and beneficial microbes
  • Maintaining organic matter for long-term soil health

Our 50‑year‑old blueberry plants have developed deep, resilient root systems that tap into the richness of the soil. This natural balance leads to stronger plants, improved drought tolerance, and blueberries with richer, more complex flavour.

Protecting Pollinators and Biodiversity

Blueberries rely on pollinators — especially bees. We protect and encourage healthy pollinator populations by:

  • Avoiding any chemical sprays
  • Maintaining flowering plants around the farm
  • Preserving natural habitat areas
  • Providing clean, safe foraging spaces

These practices support wildlife, improve pollination, and ensure consistent, high-quality fruiting.

Sustainable Water Use

Tasmania’s cool climate is ideal for blueberries, and we take care to use water responsibly.
Our water practices include:

  • Efficient irrigation systems that reduce waste
  • Mulching to maintain soil moisture
  • Watering based on plant need, not schedules
  • Monitoring seasonal rainfall to avoid unnecessary irrigation

Sustainable water use helps maintain plant health, supports soil micro‑life, and protects the surrounding ecosystem.

Handpicked with Care

Every blueberry we sell is handpicked — never machine‑harvested.
This gives us complete control over quality, ensuring that only perfectly ripe, undamaged berries make it into your punnet. Handpicking is:

  • Gentle on our 50‑year‑old plants
  • More selective and precise
  • Better for fruit quality and shelf life
  • A tradition we’re proud to maintain

We believe blueberries deserve to be harvested by humans, not machinery.

Zero-Waste, Minimal Impact

We aim to operate as close to zero-waste as possible.
Our practices include:

  • Composting organic matter
  • Using plant trimmings to build soil
  • Recycling water efficiently
  • Minimising packaging
  • Using sustainable materials wherever possible

Everything we do is designed to reduce our footprint and improve the land we grow on.

A Farming Philosophy Rooted in Respect

At Bilambil Organic Blueberry Co., farming isn’t just a job — it’s a responsibility. We see ourselves as caretakers of both the land and the crop, growing food that reflects honesty, patience, and generational knowledge.

Our 50‑year‑old blueberry plants are a living reminder of that heritage. They’ve been producing long before modern farming trends and will continue to provide beautiful, organic fruit for generations to come — as long as they are cared for with intention, respect, and natural methods.

When you choose our blueberries, you’re not just buying fruit.
You’re supporting a farm that grows with integrity, protects the environment, and honours the traditions that make truly exceptional food.
